USS Monssen (1) |
USS Monssen (DD-436), a Gleaves-class destroyer, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for Mons Monssen, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions aboard USS Missouri (BB-11) in 1904. Mons Monssen was born 1867 at Tolleshaug, Radøy near Bergen, Norway. He emigrated to the United States and served in the US Navy 1899-1925 and he died 1930. USS Monssen (1) was commissioned in 1941, the destroyer saw service during World War II in both Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Monssen was sunk at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on 13 November 1942. USS Monssen (DD-798) was a Fletcher-class, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Mons Monssen, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions aboard USS Missouri (BB-11) in 1904. Mons Monssen was born 1867 at Tolleshaug, Radøy near Bergen, Norway. He emigrated to the United States and served in the US Navy 1899-1925 and he died 1930. USS Monssen (2) was commissioned in 1944, the destroyer served during World War II in the Pacific Ocean and after the war in the Atlantic Ocean. Decommissioned 1957. NFT 2/2020 |
USS Thor |
USS Thor was a cable repair ship that supported Project Caesar, the unclassified name for installation of the Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS). Originally the Artemis-class attack cargo ship Vanadis (AKA-49) which was briefly in commission 1945-1946, it was converted in 1955 after nine years in the reserve fleet. Thor, named after the Norse god of thunder, was commissioned 1956 and served until 1973 when transferred to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) for brief operation as USNS Thor (T-ARC-4) until 1974 when the ship was returned to the Maritime Administration for dispoasl. After removal of cable machinery the ship was eventually sold for scrap in 1977. |
